There are many teams for kids to play on in the Bay Area, ranging from recreational teams to school teams to competitive teams.
Competitive Teams: Piedmont Basketball Foundation
Piedmont Basketball Foundation organizes competitive teams for grades 3 through 8. These teams play in Bay Area leagues and tournaments to give kids the opportunity to play with teammates who are also passionate about basketball and want to improve their skills by playing against excellent competition. In addition to various Bay Area tournaments, PBBF Competitive teams compete in:
Winter: Oakland Citywide League (Grades 4-8) (PBBF Contact)
East Bay Middle School League & Tournament (Grade 6)
Spring: MVP Flight Leagues
Summer: MVP Flight Leagues
Please contact us for information on any of these teams, and especially if you would like to develop your coaching knowledge and experience by being a head coach or assistant coach for one of these teams. Whether there is a team for each grade and gender in these seasons depends on the number of interested players, and especially on the dedication of parents. Piedmont Basketball Foundation teams are open to all interested players in the Bay Area and have recently included players from Piedmont, Oakland and Alameda.
The 7th and 8th grade PBBF teams are focused on preparing players to have one of the best experiences of their entire life by playing high school basketball. PBBF alumni are now playing for Piedmont High, Bishop O’Dowd, St. Mary’s and Head Royce. These teams compete in MVP Flight leagues and also several Bay Area AAU tournaments. They are coached by experienced, highly successful coaches and recent Piedmont High School basketball stars, including 2006-07 First Team Bay Shore Athletic League power forward Doug Jordan, 2006-07 PHS tri-captain Matt Mizono, and 2005-06 Optimo Award winner Justin Sherman.
Recent championships include:
2004 MVP Flight Champions – 6th Grade Boys, Power Division
2005 MVP Flight Champions – 7th Grade Boys, Power Division
2006 MVP Flight Champions – 7th Grade Boys, Power Division
2007 MVP Flight Champions – 8th Grade Boys, Power Division
Piedmont Recreation Department

The Piedmont Recreation Department organizes recreational leagues for girls and boys in grades 2 through 8 each winter. The leagues runfor approximately two months, with timing of the league for each grade and gender varying in order to accommodate all of the teams in Piedmont school gyms. There are no try-outs for these leagues, although there are player evaluations prior to each league with the goal to make the teams as even as possible. Coaches are volunteer parents or high school students. The leagues include rules that attempt to equalize playing time for all players. Certain rules to allow development of younger players apply at lower grade levels, such as no back-court pressing, no double teams and no zone defenses.
AAU Basketball Teams: In addition to PBBF sponsored teams, some PBBF players play for teams which compete in state, regional and national tournaments. If your daughter’s or son’s heart beats in time to the nearest Spalding TF-1000 basketball, then PBBF people are available to help you find the right team on which they can pursue their hoop dreams. Are there ANY clinic for K-2 grade?
There maybe a clinic for 2nd graders coming up-late December early January. Keep checking back on our website and once we are made aware of one I post here, and send you an email.
I am interested in having my fourth grade daughter become a member of a Piedmont Girls Basketball team.
The fourth grade program for the recreation department will start mid January and the MVP 4th grade program will start beginning April. Keep checking back on our site for further details or signup for our newsletter to receive the details after they are finalized.
